Perhaps you got your silver filling thinking that it would not be noticeable and realized too late that it was in fact quite visible. Maybe you chose a silver filling because you didn't know that white fillings are now much stronger than in the past. You may be concerned with the mercury content of silver fillings and decide that, even though the Canadian Dental Association has confirmed that they are safe, you don't want to take the chance and would prefer to have your silver fillings replaced with white ones. Whatever your reasons, aesthetic or practical, you can relax knowing that Dr. Kevin Clark and his dental associates can easily remedy the situation by carefully removing your old amalgam (silver) fillings and replacing them with new, tooth-coloured fillings that look and feel like the real deal!
The amalgam filling replacement process is similar to simply getting a filling.
Remove old fillings
First, Dr. Clark carefully removes the old filling and any decay that has managed to take place around the old silver filling. Any sharp edges that remain after the filling has been removed are then smoothed out and unsupported tooth enamel is also removed.
Insert new fillings
After preparing the site, Dr. Clark will then begin refilling it with a new white filling. White fillings bond excellently with tooth enamel and even dentin, the material beneath the enamel, and this ensures that the new fillings will hold tightly. A bonding agent is applied to the clean and dry site, where the previous amalgam filling had been, and the white filling composite is layered on. A special light is used between layers to ensure that each layer is dry and hard before the next is applied. After the final layer is in place, Dr. Clark will carefully mould and shape the filling to make sure it is both comfortable and natural looking. The surface is then polished, achieving the seamless sheen that makes the white filling among the most aesthetically pleasing fillings modern dentistry has available.
Amalgam filling replacement can usually be finished in one visit, meaning you can walk into the dental office with silver fillings and walk out shortly after with new fillings that blend with the colour of your teeth!
